Shine like stars

You shine like stars in the universe

As you hold out the word of life …

Philippians 2:15-16

~
Recently, our very dear family friend, Liz LaVelle, was in a fatal car wreck.  She turned twenty-years-old in June.  Liz knew how to “cultivate inner beauty”.  She had a passion for helping foster children and convinced her parents to be relief foster parents. My sister Elizabeth wrote this poem to honor Liz, and I wanted to share it with you.

For She is Shiny

is death final?
i say no.
it is a period.
at the end of a beautiful run on sentence.
in the midst of a beautiful novel.
a novel where there is, written between the lines,
a message
a secret message
not one bottled up at sea
never plainly seen
but sung so clearly
no, death is not the end

~
it’s a springboard for life
for her to unveil her love
to shine on
and to shine in
to her precious family here
she knows that love is eternal
that it lives
alive in our souls

it is good to remember
to read again the lines
to read again between them
because there
you will find her
for she is shiny
her truth in life
her love in death
is shiny

a crown of thorns

They twisted together a crown of thorns
And set it on His head.
Matthew 27:28-29

Once I heard a song of sweetness,
As it filled the morning air,
Sounding in its blest completeness,
Like a tender, pleading prayer;
And I fought to find the singer,
Where the wondrous song was borne;
And I found a bird quite wounded,
Pinned down by a cruel thorn.

I have seen a soul sadness,
While its wings with pain were furled,
Giving hope, and cheer and gladness
That should bless a weeping world
And I knew that life of sweetness,
Was of pain and sorrow borne,
And a stricken soul was singing,
With its heart against a thorn.

You are told of One who loved you,
Of a Savior crucified,
You are told of nails that held Him,
And a spear that pierced His side;
You are told of cruel scourging,
Of a Savior bearing scorn,
And He died for your salvation,
With His brow against a thorn.

You “are not above the Master.”
Will you breathe a sweet refrain?
And His grace will be sufficient,
When your heart is pierced with pain.
Will you live to bless His loved ones,
Though your life be bruised and torn,
Like the bird that sang so sweetly,
With its heart against thorn?

every tear

For the Lamb …will lead them
To springs of water.
And God will wipe away
Every tear from their eyes.
Revelation 7:17

My Dad

I grew up hearing his stories
but not this story
of being forgotten

his mother left him many times
before the final leaving
she took her children to the movie theatre
(age seven, five and four)
leaving them there alone
choosing wine and party

they waited hours after the movie
for her to remember and return
a kind man had compassion
and waited with them

my heart travels to the past
and breaks
for the loneliness,
the pain,
the future abandonment
waiting around the corner

looking at them
I can see their future
I know the amazing things
they will accomplish
because they will be captured
by One who rescues hearts

For my parents:
Happy forty-fourth wedding anniversary!
God has used your marriage to flow
“springs of living water” into my life.
With love, Sara
